Things to Do in Mijas Pueblo

A local's guide from the family who have made chocolate in the village since 2012.

Mijas Pueblo is one of the best-kept white villages of Andalucía, high on the Sierra de Mijas above the Costa del Sol. It is small enough to see on foot in a morning or an afternoon — here is what we tell our own friends to do.

Wander the white streets

Start on Plaza Virgen de la Peña, the main square, and wander up Calle San Sebastián: blue flower pots on whitewashed walls, and the most photographed street in the village. Early morning and late afternoon have the softest light and the fewest people.

The chapel in the rock

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña is a small chapel carved into the rock centuries ago, home to the village’s patron saint. Right beside it, the viewpoint looks over the coast down to Fuengirola and the sea.

The old walls and the big views

Behind the Church of the Inmaculada Concepción, the remains of the old walls are now the Jardines de la Muralla: gardens with the widest views in Mijas, over the coast, the Mediterranean and the mountains. Lovely at sunset.

Museums

Mijas is small but has more museums than you would expect:

CAC Mijas, the contemporary art centre, with a remarkable collection of Picasso ceramics; the Miniatures Museum, full of tiny curiosities from around the world; and the village history museum, which shows how life in Mijas used to be.

And on the main square, our own chocolate factory and museum, where you can see — and taste — how cacao becomes chocolate.

A short walk with a view

For a short climb with a big reward, follow the Vía Crucis path from the edge of the village up to the Ermita del Calvario, a little hilltop chapel. Allow around an hour there and back, take water, and avoid the midday heat in summer.

Mijas with children

Mijas is compact and easy to walk with children, with ice cream never far away. Our chocolate workshops start from age 3. For more ideas, read our guide to things to do in Mijas with kids.

Getting there and parking

Mijas Pueblo is about 20 minutes up the hill from Fuengirola, by car or by bus — buses run from Fuengirola through the day. By car, use the public car park at the entrance to the village and walk in: everything in this guide is within walking distance.

Make your own chocolate

Between the views and the museums, come and make your own chocolate at our factory on Plaza Virgen de la Peña — hands-on workshops for families, adults and groups. Everything you make is yours to take home.
